Breathing: The Basics

Breathing. We all do it, and yet, most of us do it wrong. In fact, up to 80% of people display patterns and habits of dysfunctional breathing (DB). A person who reaches the age of 80, will breathe 670,000,000+ times. What should the breath count actually be to meet the functional design of the body and optimize performance? 252,288,000! That is 2.65 times fewer breaths.

At Stasis, we believe it is important to teach the principles of breathing for people to receive the most value, live a healthier and happier life, and find balance. Our Breathing 101 program is a quick read and will deliver the basics to build a foundational approach to breathing. This program will take you through the three pillars of breathing; mechanics, chemistry and respiratory rate.

The cliff notes:

  1. Mechanics: inhale and exhale through the nose and use your diaphragm

  2. Chemistry: the amount of air exchange during each breath

  3. Respiratory rate: 6 breath cycles per minute, 4 second inhale, 6 second exhale

While many people are impacted by DB, few know how their DB negatively impacts them. DB is associated with neck and back pain, stress, anxiety and depression, among many other health and cognitive concerns. The upside of proper breathing is immense, and directly affects the autonomic nervous system for positive results linked to heart rate, emotion regulation, stress, anxiety - and the list goes on.
